Over the past several months, Doctors Fred Costello and Daniel Drake of the Atlantic Center for Comprehensive Dentistry have been working with United Way of Volusia-Flagler Counties to develop “United We SMILE!” The doctors’ mission is to play a key role in changing lives and creating productive members of our community by providing dental services to those in need. The program will focus on adults ages 19 – 65 who can not afford these services; and due to their dental needs may be incurring health, personal and/or professional success challenges. It is well regarded that a healthy smile can dramatically make a difference in one’s life and the doctors look to offer such services to the underserved population. “Ever since we entered the dental profession we have seen an overwhelming need for dental care at all socioeconomic levels, but especially in the underserved and underprivileged populations. We conceptualized “United We SMILE!” to provide dental services and promote oral health through an outreach program designed to provide proper care for those less fortunate. Although funding is typically a major roadblock to providing such care, we believe we have designed a plan that would enable our patients and interested community supporters to make voluntary contributions to “United We SMILE!” in concert with our own monetary and in-kind contributions from our practice. We are hopeful other dentists will join with us as participants in the program. We are very optimistic that “United We SMILE!” will change lives for the better!” Eligible program participants will be chosen from United Way Partner Agencies. “United We SMILE!” launched on October 15, 2009, partnering with Stewart-Marchman-Act Behavioral Healthcare’s Project WARM, The Homeless Assistance Center, and Family Renew Community. The Community can donate to the “United We SMILE!” Fund by donating to United Way, note in memo line for “United We SMILE!. Donations can also be received at: Atlantic Center for Comprehensive Dentistry Or donate online! Be sure to put "United We SMILE" as the agency in the designation box.
