DEADLINE FOR APPLYING FOR DISASTER UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS IS JUNE 29TH.

DONATIONS

Non-cash donations may be made 24 hours a day at several Daytona Beach fire stations through Thursday (6/4): (Fire Stations located at 301 S Beach Street, 126 Botefuhr Ave, 945 N Halifax, 1675 Mason Ave, 627 N Nova Rd, 2020 Beville Rd, 2545 LPGA). Items requested include: personal hygiene items, soaps, washcloths, underwear, adult socks, adult T-shirts, adult & child diapers, bandages, insect repellent, garbage bags and air mattresses.

 

Local Goodwill locations are accepting donations of gently used clothing and furniture. They have provided referral which Red Cross is giving to Verified residents who have been who have been impacted by the recent floods. They are located at 1577 North Nova Road Holly Hill and 3997 North Nova Road, Port Orange.

 

The Jewish Federation of Volusia/Flagler is accepting gently used/non-flooded furniture and will pick it up.  Those wishing to donate to the Jewish Federation can call their number 672-0294.

 

The Christ Team located at 1236 8th Street is accepting donations which can be dropped off there or call for pickup 386-255-4357 hours M-Saturday 10 am – 6 pm. Sunday 1-5-pm.  They will accept requests from affected persons with a Referral from Red Cross. They provide clothing, furniture and household goods.

VOLUNTEERS

·         Emergency officials and the United Way ask residents who want to volunteer to be patient and not “self-deploy” into the affected areas.

·         Citizens needing volunteers to assist with cleanup efforts are encouraged to contact the Red Cross to make a request. The appropriate referrals will then be made.

·         Currently, volunteers who are skilled and experienced in muck-outs, dry wall and mold remediation are needed to assist those who have been impacted by the floods.

·         City of Daytona Beach is in search of volunteers to help assemble comfort kits on Thursday, June 4th at 1pm and then also to help distribute the kits on Friday, June 5th.

·         Salvation Army is seeking administrative support to help answer phones at their Social Services Centers in Daytona Beach and Bunnell.

·        City of Daytona Beach is seeking volunteer support to assist with their Community Development Table at the DRC at the Dickerson Center, specifically Saturday and Sunday of this week from shifts split between 7am-7pm. Click here to register.

Residents who are currently experiencing home damage as a result of last week's rainfall should contact the American Red Cross at (386) 226-1400. The agency is logging calls of affected addresses. Information the American Red Cross receives assists in damage assessment coordination, facilitates appropriate levels of response to affected areas and helps determine shelter needs.

Mucking Out Instructions

 

1.     Remove wet sheetrock and insulation at least 6 inches above the water line (or more) if it appears the sheetrock has absorbed water higher up.

·        Measure, mark and cut out sheetrock and insulation with box cutter or Exacto knife blade.

·        Pry out the damaged sheetrock and insulation.

2.     Take out sheetrock and insulation in 4ft or 8 ft sections.

·        Replacement sheetrock will come in 4ft or 8ft sections.

3.     If electrical outlets are wet, do not replace walls until an electrical inspection is done.

·        Electrical outlets that have gotten wet will have to be replaced.

4.     Once sheetrock and insulation is down and all wet areas are exposed, wash down with Clorox, water-soluble Borax, or a commercial fungicide.

·        If Clorox is used, mixture should be 10 gallons of water to 1 gallon of Clorox.

5.     Wipe down the damaged area and let it dry for several days. If needed, wash down a second time and let damaged area dry a couple more days. When completely dry, replace the dry wall.

·        A dehumidifier might be helpful.

 

Workers need to wear:

·        Protective boots, preferably steel-toed

·        Rubber gloves

·        Disposable “paper like” suit garb over clothing

·        Dust mask 

·        Goggles

Safety Tips to ensure the safety of the workers:

·        Work in pairs or groups and take short breaks.

·        Work during the cooler hours of the day.

·        Immediately clean open wounds with soap & water. Cuts beyond minor scratches may require medical attention.

·        Never assume that water-damaged structures are safe. Leave if shifting or unusual noises occur.

·        Avoid lifting more than 50 pounds.

·        Avoid heat stroke by wearing light-colored, loose-fitting. clothing and drinking fluids every 15-20 minutes.

·        Never handle a downed power line.
